Why the Cheapest Quote Isn't Always the Best Investment

Not All Renovations Are Created Equal
When most people think about renovating their home, they picture the finished product — a fresh kitchen, a new bathroom, an extra room for the kids. What they don't always see is everything that happens in the walls, under the floor, and above the ceiling before that fresh coat of paint goes on. That's where the real difference between builders lies.
At Viking Built, we work across the full spectrum of renovation work — from modest alterations and additions through to substantial new extensions that transform a home entirely. And across every one of those projects, regardless of size, we hold ourselves to the same standard.
There Are Levels to This
Not every builder approaches a renovation the same way. Some are focused purely on getting work done quickly and cheaply. There's a place for that — but it's not what we do.
We think carefully about how a renovation performs over its lifetime. That means looking at thermal performance: how well the building holds heat in winter, stays cool in summer, and reduces the energy demands on the household. It means thinking about moisture management, structural longevity, and the quality of the materials and methods that go into every part of the build — not just the parts you can see.
These decisions aren't always the cheapest option on the table. But they're the right ones.
Quality Is Non-Negotiable
We'll be honest — if you're shopping purely on price, we're probably not the cheapest quote you'll receive. We're okay with that. What we're not okay with is cutting corners on the things that matter: the insulation behind the plasterboard, the flashing detail around a window, the way a frame is built to handle what the Southern Highlands climate throws at it.
A renovation done properly should make your home more comfortable, more energy efficient, and more resilient for decades to come. That's the standard we hold ourselves to — and it shapes every decision we make on site.

Built to Code. Built to Drawing. Built to Last.
Quality in construction isn't just a mindset — it's a legal and professional obligation. Every project we undertake is built in strict accordance with the National Construction Code (NCC), which sets the minimum standards for safety, health, amenity, and sustainability across all residential building work in Australia. For us, the NCC isn't a ceiling — it's a baseline.
Beyond code compliance, we build to the design documentation. That means following the engineering drawings, architectural plans, and specifications precisely — not approximately. When a detail is drawn a certain way, there's usually a good reason for it, whether that's structural, weatherproofing, thermal performance, or simply ensuring the finished result matches what the client was promised. Deviating from the design, even with good intentions, creates risk — and we don't accept that risk on our projects or pass it on to our clients.
We also take seriously something that too many builders shy away from: non-compliant work doesn't get painted over — it gets fixed. If something isn't right, whether it's our work or a subcontractor's, it comes out and it's done again correctly. No shortcuts, no hoping the inspector won't notice, no passing the problem on to the next trade. The structure of a home underpins everything above and around it, and we treat it that way.
This commitment to getting it right — to the code, to the drawings, and to our own standards — is what gives our clients confidence that their home has been built properly.
Not just built quickly. Not just built cheaply. Built right.

The Viking Built Difference
If you're looking for a builder who takes as much pride in the work you can't see as the work you can, we'd love to have a conversation. We work with homeowners across the Southern Highlands who want their renovation done once, done properly, and done to a standard they'll still be proud of in twenty years' time.
